First of all thanks so much to all who have been visiting this site, Since last Tuesday we have had over 1000 hits!!!
Here’s my (PL Holden’s) picks for the awards which will take place this Saturdday with host Jonathon Torrens who is well known for his portrayal of J-Roc (Scroll down to the bottom for the “Best of..” Video) on the cult favorite “The Trailer Park Boys”. Check the latest Buzz for Workshops and all the events & nominees!
- Achievement in Classical Music – UPEI Wind Symphony. They did a great job with their “Lord of the Rings” performances this year.
- Album – The Express. Kinley Dowling of Hey Rosetta! & Liam Corcoran put together a great album which I found really relaxing & Folky.
- Country Recording – Kelley Mooney. This county singer has a lot of heart & a great voice. Her rendition of Leonard Cohen is very well liked.
-
Entertainer – Tim Chaisson & Morning Fold. The new album “Broken Hearted Beat” features some very impressive tracks. The band had a great year not only keeping Islanders entertained but venturing as far as Australia to promote the record.
- Event – Doug Riley Artist Concert from Jazz & Blues Fest. I had a chance to take this one in at St. Paul’s and the players & sound quality was beyond impressive. With Sean Ferris, Joey Kitson, & Meaghan Blanchard to name a few, it was brilliant!
- Female Recording – Catherine MacLellan “Silhouette”. Catherine MacLellan had a great year and put her superb songwriting skills on display with the new album.
- Group Recording – The Express
- Loud Recording – Death Valley Driver “Choke the River”. Death Valley Driver opened for Metallica last summer so they must be doing something right. Known for being heavy hitters, they had their latest album produced by Haywire’s David Rashed.
- Male Recording – Jordan Cameron. Jordan is a great performer and a great guy. His imaginative lyrics tell stories and his stage presence really makes for a great show.
- Musician – Mark Geddes. Haunted Hearts & being one of Gordie MacKeeman’s rhythm boys are what he’s best known for & they’re both great acts.
- New Artist – Ashley Condon/Ten Strings & a Goatskin. Ashley’s name has been popping up a lot during 2011 and was probably best known for her stint with Come-All-Ye last summer. Ten Strings also did great with their album “Tri” so I gave them a tie.
- Studio/Technician – Lucas Raine Recordings. David Skinner (who you can also find at Long & MacQuade) had a very impressive year recording stuff from Highway Flower, Arrows in the Air, and Boxcar Dan to name a few. He’s a great guy and definitely knows his stuff behind the mixing board.
- Hunter’s Ale House Rock Recording – Jordan Cameron
- Roots Contemporary- Catherine MacLellan “ Silhouette”/Dennis Ellsworth “ Strange Boat” I talked about Catherine’s expertise earlier, & Dennis is really up there too, with at least 20 years of writing, recording, & performing under his belt. I’m on the fence.
- Roots Traditional- Ten Strings & a Goatskin “Tri”
- SOCAN Songwriter – The Express “ Midnight Show”. I love that song, click the link to hear it on MySpace.
- Spincount Touring Artist – Tim Chaisson & Morning Fold
- Venue – Hunter’s/ The Guild. Where else are you gonna see acts like Matt Mays for $5.00? And I gotta give credit to The Guild for not only some spectacular concerts but great live theatre like Catherine O’Brien’s “Fascinating Ladies”
- Video – Boxcar Dan & the Vagabond Stangers “The Way we Do’er” (Jason Rogerson)/ Catherine MacLellan “Stealin” (Millefiore Clarkes) These two videos are awesome in their own way. Boxcar Dan’s is like a hillbilly tour of PEI, & Millefiore’s camera work on “Stealin” is really cutting edge. Click the links to see them on Youtube!
- Visual Artist- Lorne Miller (pixbylorne). His photography of musicians on PEI in the Buzz & everywhere else speaks for itself (check the link).
